Long Canyon Ranch is located in the Canyon behind Brokaw Nursery in the Ventura foothills. Purchased in 2019, the property had previously hosted a 25 acre avocado planting that was extensively damaged in the 2019 Thomas fire.

Located within Ventura’s ideal avocado growing area, Long Canyon Ranch has a total area of 370 acres of which about 70 acres have the potential to be planted.

Between 2019 and 2022, around 50 acres have been planted to Avocado, of which 50% are Hass variety and 50% GEM variety. As part of Brokaw Nursery’s ongoing research efforts, several rootstock trials featuring both commercial and experimental selections have been established and are being monitored for their performance. These will provide California growers with real life performance information and data to enable informed rootstock selection.

We believe that in order to ensure future viability, California growers must optimize the utilization of our resources, and at Brokaw Nursery and Long Canyon Ranch we are committed to growing the best avocadoes in a sustainable and profitable way. In our case this means employing relatively high planting densities in a high intervention / high productivity management system. In order to sustain these high densities over the life of the orchard, we implement 4 key cultural practices: planting on berms, use of driplines for irrigation, pruning and girdling (we do not girdle GEM trees due to a natural excess of flowers).
